I was invited to photograph Lech for the designer of the Aurelio hotel , Tino Zervudachi in 2008. Before arriving here I had mainly skied in France and Switzerland but never in Austria . My love of skiing and being in the mountains has been a passion of mine since I learnt to ski and this was exactly the kind of job that hoped for when I signed to be a photographer 25 years ago.
I arrived in Lech after a two week snowfall at the end of the 2008 season - my guide met me at the Schlegelkopf chairlift and we started to ascend to the top - by the time I had reached the top of the Kriegerhorn I had already taken 10 shots – the clouds lifted and drifted over the distant valleys and my heart raced as I realised I was in a beautiful place and in a photographers paradise with endless visual possibilities. After three days I had shot over 500 images . I returned in the summer and spent a week chasing the clouds as one storm after another came down the valley. This completed my first phase of photography in Lech and 200 of these images were then hung in the hotel where they remain to this day .
I had taken such a large amount of good photographs that I decided to make a book and set about making this happen and after several more visits and a lot of help from Lech tourism I produced Above the Clouds.
My experience of visiting Lech and meeting so many wonderful people really inspired me to make the book . The overriding atmosphere of warmth, beauty , culture and traditional values were elements I wanted to reflect in the book not only through the photos but also by including some words . With the help of Anna Tyzack form the Telegraph magazine we compiled a set of quotations from locals and famous writers.
The aim of the book is to try and convey the heightened experience of being in the mountains, when all the senses are alive. Whether on foot, on skis , in the car or lying in the meadows Lech is a magical place full of understated charm and quiet, dramatic beauty . It is the place that redirected my lens towards the natural world and has now become me and my family’s favourite place to spend time.
Thank you Lech !
